Artists' Book Elective

Stage 2 Painting students are given the opportunity to elect to develop their ideas through artists' books in 2nd semester.

Projects are set to stimulate differing approaches to the artists' book and the elective culminates in a collaborative project with printmaking elective students. This project demands that the students work in pairs to produce a printed book or folio of prints.
This grounding allows students to gain skills and ways of thinking about how books can be useful within their practice and which they can go on to employ during the rest of their studies.

Colouring Book, George Kettlewell

A series of screenprinted colouring books which contain images collated from diverse appropriated sources. Books were given away to a range of people in order that they could colour them in their own unique way. The results offered an eclectic array of responses.

Printed Ephemera

A collaborative project initiated to encourage the development of cross discipline activity in ideas and techniques between Stage 3 students studying Painting in the School of Art and Printed Textiles in the School of Design.
Students were each asked to make collections of any kind of printed ephemera which was of interest to them and through discussion pairings were made so that each Painting student would be working with a Textiles student.
Students were then asked to explore their ideas from their differing perspectives with the ultimate goal of producing a printed book. Workshops enabled students to learn techniques taught across each of the departments allowing them to achieve their aims.

London Art Book Fair 2011, Whitechapel Gallery 23rd - 25th September 2011

A broad selection of books made by students from the School of Art from Stage 2 to Post Graduate. Some books were made as elements of set projects within the School, but the majority give a critically important method of containing work and reaching a wider audience and are used to support students' individual studio practice. This selection was taken form a large submission from across the School.
