London Art Book Fair, 2013

Whitechapel Gallery 13th – 15th September

Second Century Press was selected for the fifth year running to exhibit at this prestigious event, which is recognised internationally and attended by artists, publishers and audiences from around the world.
Students from across The School of Art were invited to submit books for consideration and a variety of examples were selected for inclusion on the stand. ECA’s stand showed books from the 2nd Year Artists’ Book Elective Collaborative Print Project, The Peploe Project and a wide range from students who have chosen to use the artist’s book as an important element in their practice. ‘Forest Pitch’, Craig Coulthard’s publication recording his project that was part of the London 2012 Festival and Cultural Olympiad was also a valuable addition to the books on display.
The event offered students an excellent opportunity to showcase their work and for those attending to meet their audience and other exhibitors and to take advantage of the events programme associated with the fair which this year included talks by Luc Tuymans and Cornelia Parker.

ECA / Ed Neuro - A Collaboration Between Artists and Scientists at The University of Edinburgh

This Second Century Press publication records the ECA / Ed Neuro project where students at Edinburgh College of Art were invited to collaborate with scientists across Neuroscience at The University of Edinburgh. The students visited the labs and made work in response to their findings. After presenting proposals they were all asked to design a poster and these were shown at the Edinburgh Neuroscience Conference in March 2013. Five finalists were chosen to make work that was also exhibited at the conference. The book includes documentation of the whole project, from the initial meetings when students and scientists looked at one another's work in order to negotiate collaborative pairings to the conference day and was launched at 48hrs / Encounters at Inspace, The University of Edinburgh in May 2013.

Afterword: Contemporary Responses to Peploe

9th March - 23rd June 2013
Keiller Library, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art invited Third and Fourth Year Painting students to make artists' books in response to the work of S J Peploe. Students were asked to consider the exhibition of Peploe's work which opened to the public in November 2012 . The students could explore any aspect of Peploe's life or work and they could celebrate or subvert it.

From a strong submission of 29 students' work 16 books were selected and exhibited in the Keiller Library, a space that is specially designed for the display of books and archive material. The books offer a wide range of contemporary responses to Peploe's work and form an afterword to the main exhibition bringing fresh ideas about Peploe to the fore.
